Challenge:
Upskilling unemployed, underprivileged youth in KwaZulu-Natal
Impact:
194 learners completed the programme, 8 gained permanent employment
The Challenge
Turning funding into future-fit skills
As a funding entity reporting to the Department of Higher Education, the NSF’s core mission is to support national
skills development priorities.
The aim of this project is to address a critical gap: equipping unemployed post-school youth in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) with ICT and digital skills aligned to South Africa’s future economy.
The learners – aged 18–27 and from underprivileged backgrounds – lacked access to further education and employment opportunities. The goal? Provide an entry-level ICT qualification alongside real workplace experience.
The Solution
A tailored learnership for impact
NSF selected the NQF Level 4 Technical Support Learnership, which balanced classroom training with hand-son exposure in both school and corporate settings.
The programme was designed to:
- Support youth entering the high-growth ICT sector
- Provide a recognised qualification and workplace experience
- Create long-term employability and economic participation
This solution aligned closely with the National Development Plan 2030 and helped bridge the digital divide for
underrepresented youth in KZN.
Implementation
A journey of growth and grit
From carefully selecting candidates to onboarding partners and mentors, the implementation was packed with lessons and wins.
Surprise wins?
Learners’ rapid adaptation and the ripple effect on existing teams – boosted morale, better collaboration, and a renewed sense of purpose.
Hero moment
While no single standout emerged, the collective resilience and optimism of these learners stood as a shining beacon of what’s possible when doors are opened.
Measurable Impact
Beyond compliance, toward inclusion
The client partnered with LRMG’s EUC Learnership Programme, selecting it for its comprehensive curriculum and real-world integration capabilities.
What changed?
- Unemployed disabled youth now possess in-demand digital skills
- Participating businesses reported an improved workplace culture and performance
- Tangible improvements in CSI and B-BBEE Scorecard ratings
- A shift in team dynamics that boosted collaboration and innovation
Feedback from the field:
Lessons learned and the road ahead
Do it again? Absolutely.
Do it differently? Improve funding coordination and streamline onboarding, but keep the strong learner support and community partnerships.
Inclusion creates impact
This isn’t just a compliance win – it’s a story of empowerment, transformation, and inclusive growth. By equipping disabled youth with the tools to thrive, the client helped write a new future for both the learners and the workplaces that welcomed them.
